Vainga Tone appointed as new Lord Privy Seal

16 January 2011 Earlier this week Mr. Va'inga Tone commenced his new appointment as the Lord Privy Seal, being the third holder of the position.

The Lord Privy Seal (or, more formally, the Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal), where its holder is responsible for the Privy Council Meetings and appointed to such title by the King.

The Office of the Lord Privy Seal is among several of His Majesty's Departments whereby the Lord Privy Seal will also supervise the National Identification Card Office, overseeing the administering of the national identity card scheme.

The first Lord Privy Seal, Mr. Sateki Hopoate ‘Ahio was approved by Cabinet and the Privy Council in 2008.

Prior to taking up his new position, Mr. Tone has served as Tonga's Secretary for Foreign Affairs for many years since early 2000.  He is a retired officer of the Tonga Defence Services, acquiring the rank of Major.
