Tonga Power Ltd embarked today on a seven year project worth TOP $16.4m to improve it’s distribution network

The Minister of Finance and National Planning, Public Enterprises and Information, Hon. Afu’alo Matoto, officiated before the lunch hour today at the junction of Laifone and Taufa’ahau Roads to mark the beginning by Tonga Power Limited of replacing the old power poles to enhance distribution lines throughout the country.

The Hon. Minister , told the Media on location, “This is part of the programme of capital development for the Tonga Power Limited, to upgrade the distribution network, make it a lot safer, reduce the risk like the poles that we see here and this will be done throughout the whole of Tongatapu, Ha’apai, Vava’u and ‘Eua. This will help to reduce the cost of electricity, raise the efficiency of the Power distribution and help reduce the consumption as well.”

Present at the brief ceremony was the Acting Chief Executive for Tonga Power Limited Mr. David Wright, who informed the media that, “Tonga Power will spend TOP $16.4m over the next seven years to improve the electricity distribution network of power lines and poles. I am glad to inform the people of Tonga that we are now replacing the old concrete poles which have reached the end of their life and are unsafe.”

It was also a happy occasion for the Tonga Power Limited’s employees as they were using their fleet of 5 new vehicles shipped from New Zealand. Mr. Wright added, “ A new set of 150 uniforms and linesmen’s tools were also bought in New Zealand for our workmen to use.”
