11 June 2013 The long awaited Fibre Optic Cable landed in Tonga today to joyous celebrations led by theHon Prime Minister of Tonga, Lord Tu'ivakano.

With over 200 guests including Cabinet Ministers, Government Officials and the Private Sector in attendance, the momentous occasion was celebrated in front of the Tonga Cable
Landing Station in Sopu, Tongatapu.

The French Cable Ship Ile de Re, having laid the fibre optic cable over a distance of 827km's from Fiji, took only 10 days to cover the distance. As the ship steered closer to shore, the
Cable was delivered to its undersea position by a computerized led Buoy. The symbolic buoy, illustrating the names "Tonga Cable Limited" and "Alcatel-Lucent" was cut under sea
by Divers and presented to the Prime Minister to mark the historical event.

"Today is a remarkable occasion for Tongans locally and abroad as it signifies the beginning of a new era", said Mr Paula Ma'u, the Chief Executive officer for the Ministry of Information
and Communications. "We will now experience faster internet speed with higher bandwidth capacity at a more affordable price which will contribute significantly to the advancement of the Telecommunications and ICT sector in Tonga", he said.

In delivering the Key note address at the event, the Prime Minister expressed Tonga's sincere gratitude to the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and Tonga Telecommunications Corporation for the financial support in accomplishing what was once a dream for Tonga.

The USD$34 Million Cable Project will be officially commissioned in the first week of August 2013 to coincide with the commencement of the Cable's operation and commercial activities.
