05th June 2018 Tonga celebrates the 46th anniversary of the World Environment Day, which is celebrated annually on June 5.

This year’s theme is Healthy Ocean – For Food Security, Climate Resilience, Livelihoods and Human Well Being.

At the same time the Kingdom, through the Department of Environment under the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change & Communications, is celebrating the National Environment Awareness Week from June 3 to June 9, 2018.

The Minister of MEIDECC, Hon Poasi Tei, opened the week at a church service held at Hofoa Village on Sunday, June 3, which was attended by staff of the ministry.

The United Nations held its first major conference on international environmental issues in 1972 and to mark the opening of this conference the United Nations General Assembly established World Environment Day on June 5 that year.

In the 46 years since 1972 there have been a number of major conferences addressing international environmental issues and Tonga has become a party to international agreements on climate change, biological diversity, and hazardous waste management, the protection of the ozone layer and the prevention of marine pollution.

The Ministry of MEIDECC through the Department of Environment implements Tonga’s  obligations under these agreements.

The Ministry plays an important role within our Government advising on matters of environmental management, climate change, the protection and conservation of natural resources and the promotion of sustainable development.

From June 3 to June 8, the Ministry of MEIDECC will be conducting a number of programs and public will have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities.

As part of National Environment Awareness Week the Kingdom of Tonga is joining with people around the world to celebrate the 46th anniversary of World Environment Day on June 5.

Hon Tei said this worldwide event is one of the major occasions in the world where the focus is on the environment.

“On this day, the United Nations Environment Programme encourages us to think about the theme: Marine Pollutions,” he said.

This theme is closely linked to the theme for Tonga’s National Environment Awareness Week and accentuates the role of the individual in the green economy – an economy which is low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive. It is individuals have the power to change and support economic development that complements our environment and I encourage you to consider how you can play a role in developing a green economy for Tonga.”

By celebrating World Environment Day and participating in National Environment Awareness Week activities Tonga is able to work together with the rest of the world to lend a hand to improve our world for a cleaner, greener and better future.
