Law Week 2017 Open Day

08th November, 2017 More than 50 guests attended Tonga’s Law Week Open Day at the CBD Square, Nuku’alofa this morning. The week-long event started on Monday, November 6 under the theme ‘The Law and Good Leadership’.

Tonga’s Police Commissioner Mr. Stephen Caldwell in his keynote address said, “Our role is to protect and serve our country and community; to prevent crime and bad things from happening to you and if a crime is committed we must enforce the Law with restraint, common sense and compassion – we investigate and arrest the offenders, keep the peace.”

Mr. Caldwell stated that Tonga Police take care of communities and they have the privilege of serving because they belong to the people, the land and the nation.

“The foundation of good policing is a good relationship with the people we serve based on trust and respect. We police by consent of the people. We have a great responsibility in upholding the rule of law without fear or favour. We have great responsibility in keeping our communities safe.”

He told the gathering that a good leader has the courage to make the right decision with positive influence on changing behavior.

“A good leader must be honest with others and themselves in setting examples with their own behavior and standards. A good leader must put service to our country and people first, in competent and practice the skills necessary for the position they hold – Education is very important.”

He urged guests and those who are pursuing a career in law to follow their dreams and work hard in reaching their goals.

“Be as good as you can be. Do your best and you will succeed whatever you choose to do.”

Several government ministries and non-government organizations participated in the event by displaying posters and publications related to law.

Attending the opening program were the Acting Attorney General and Director of Public Prosecutions Mr. ‘Aminiasi Kefu, Chairperson of the Tonga National Leadership Development Forum Mr. Drew Havea, Tonga High School Chaplain Rev. Penisimani Tonga, representatives from line ministries, NGOs and guests.
