Pink October stirs up support in the public service

17 October 2010. First launched in October 2007, Tonga's Breast Cancer Society was an initiative spearheaded by local business businesswoman, Christine ‘Uta'atu, the society's treasurer, who organized the first Pink October Breast Cancer Walk, by selling pink T-shirts, bracelets and pink ribbons with the theme, "Ofa ki ho'o mo'ui" to private sector businesses.

Considering an increasing number of cases happen to a number of Tongan women in the past five years, the cause was to raise awareness of the disease and to raise money for the society by making available key information and provide guidance to families of victims suffering the disease.

With three years running, the society's members have grew and appealed to not only fellow businesswomen, private sector businesses, nurses and medical doctors, but the cause has now encouraged schools and government civil servants to wear a pink item every Friday in October, in support of the cause.

This year's theme, "Early Detection and Treatment saves Lives", one can see pink colourful banners across Nuku'alofa's streets, promoting Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
This year, Pink October activities include a Pasikala Nuku'alofa "Pink" bike ride across Vuna Road and Information Booth to be setup at the Pacifika Trade Fair, at Queen Salote Memorial Hall from October 21-23.

The Annual Awareness Walk will take place on October 30, early in the morning at 8:00 am at Akoteu grounds (Mala'e Maamaloa) and is open to anyone who wants to join from businesses, schools, government offices and any independent groups wishing to participate.

The Society's Patron, the Hon. Lupepau'u Tuita and the President, the Hon. Frederica Tuita are expected to lead the walk including dozens of groups of women and men in pink, marching the streets of Nuku'alofa to celebrate the cause.
