Sunia Fili, elected new Chair of whole Committee

IT is vital for the Chairperson of the Whole House Committee of the Legislative Assembly to be impartial when carrying out its duties.

This is according to ‘Eua MP Constituency, Sunia Fili who takes up his new post as the new Chairperson of the Whole House Committee today.

Sunia Fili replaces Hon. Siosifa Tu'utafaiva who recently takes up new Cabinet portfolio as Minister of Police and Inland Revenue Services.

Speaking to Parliament News today, he says a Chairperson of the Committee plays a crucial role in moderating the House's deliberation.

He also noted the need for Members to be more efficient.

"MPs are being urged to use time wisely and to deliberate on issues for the best interest of the people. This is among many concerns raised by the people.

This is also the King's wishes for MPs to use the allocated time provided wisely to discuss matters and issues for the betterment of the people," said the new Chairperson of the Whole House.

As a member of Parliament for 15 years, Sunia is excited to take up this new job.

He also pointed out that it's significant when executing the duty is to perform according to the House's Standing Orders.

He is also elated to become the new Chair as it is important to have experience with different aspects of the legislative work.

The Committee of the Whole House is where the robust debate, scrutiny of bills and discussion of important national matter takes place.
